How to restart iPhone

If you have installed iOS 11 or later on your iPhone, go to Settings → General → tap on Shut Down to restart your device → slide to power off to confirm the action.

If you have an iPhone with iOS 10 or previous versions, its restart depends on the model of the device. Here is what you can do:

  • With an iPhone 8 and earlier models, press the Side button or the Top button and hold it for a few seconds until the slider appears on the screen. Then, swipe slide to power off to turn the iPhone off. After you have successfully switched your iPhone off, you can restart the iPhone 8 or earlier model. For this, press the Side button or the Top button and hold it until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
  • On iPhone X and later models, press both the Side and Volume Up or Volume Down buttons and hold them for several seconds until the slide to power off slider appears. Then, swipe it to turn the device off. Now you can turn your device on to restart iPhone X or later models. For this, press the Side button and hold it until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

How to hard restart an iPhone

In the case when your device’s screen is black or frozen, you should try to hard reboot the iPhone. This will NOT erase your data from the smartphone.

To force restart an iPhone 8, X, and 11 you should press three buttons step by step. So, press and instantly release the Volume Up button → press and quickly release the Volume Down button → press the Side button and hold it until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Restart an iPhone from iTunes

Let’s say you have completed the previous steps to reboot your iPhone, but it still does not work. Instead, you see the Apple logo or a blue or red screen. It is likely that your iPhone gets stuck on the restart screen. In this case, you can try to reboot it via iTunes. For this, complete the following steps:

  1. Connect your iPhone to a computer and launch iTunes. Depending on the model of your iPhone, complete the following steps:
  2. On an iPhone 8 and later models, press the Volume Up button → press and instantly release the Volume Down button → press the Side button and hold it until you see the recovery-mode screen.
Note that even if the Apple logo appears, you should keep holding the buttons until you see the recovery-mode screen.
  3. In the window that appears on the computer, you will be asked to restore or update this iPhone. Select Update to allow iTunes to reinstall iOS. In this case, iTunes will try to keep your data.

Please note, if this process takes more than 15 minutes, your iPhone will quit the recovery mode. You can repeat the steps listed above. However, we advise contacting Apple support or visiting the nearest Apple store for help.
